Sunderland Student Television

Sunderland Student Television was a student television station I founded in my third year at university. I started this project because I wanted to meet other people in the university that were as dedicated to television production as I am. I wanted to mirror the success the student radio station had done and apply that to television production. The station broadcast it content online and across the campus on university flat screens.

After lots of pre production, editing and hard work we had 7 different programs to showcase on the station and the university then gave the go ahead for the station to run during term time and have complete access to the TV studio and video equipment.sstv studio

I ended up doing more jobs than I thought to keep the station afloat. This included post production editing, web management and distribution and producing the live shows. The university didn't have the budget to fund the project and I ended up financing the station off my own back as a result it maxed out my overdraft. It was all worth it when I represented Sunderland University at the National Student Television Awards 2008 and walked away with two high commended awards.

Since I’ve left, I’m pleased to say that Sunderland Student Television is in its second year of broadcast. It is recognised by the university and its students for original student programming and has become an advertised feature of the university alongside the university’s radio station. Its been one of my most successful projects to date and I know will give students the chance to create programmes outside of scheduled lessons.
